Joash

Joash
   1) (Jehoash) (fl. 9th cent BCE)
King of Judah (835-798 BCE). His grandmother Athaliah seized the throne and murdered all members of the house of David when Joash was a year old. He was rescued by his aunt Jehosheba, wife of the high priest Jehoiada. Jehoiada later crowned him king, had Athaliah put to death, and acted as regent until Joash became king when he was seven. Joash restored the Temple, but he later deviated from following Jewish law. During his reign, Judah was invaded by Hazael of Aram. Joash was killed by conspirators (II Kings 11-14).
   2) (Jehoash) (fl. 9th cent BCE)
King of Israel (801-785 BCE). After Aram was defeated by the Assyrians, he recaptured several towns ceded by his father Jehoahaz. When Amaziah of Judah attempted to free his country from Israelite domination, Joash captured Jerusalem, plundered the Temple and royal treasures, and reduced the country to vassaldom (II Kings 13:10-13).
